About Me

Hi! My name’s Larry Chan, and I’m a full time illustrator.

I was born in Hong Kong, and I’m still proud to call it home. My Cantonese name is 陳得雋 (or 'Chan Tak Chun’). I graduated from California College of the Arts in San Francisco, with a BFA in Illustration.

Drawing has been a passion for my whole life. The first two artists I ever knew of were Vincent Van Gogh (who painted the Starry Night) and Stephen Biesty (who draws amazing cross-sections of buildings and vehicles; all with ink on paper and no rulers). They’re still two of my favorites.

I love exploring. From traveling abroad, I found a love for landscapes and cityscapes. I often draw the places I visit, and I’ve infused aspects of them into my more fantasy artworks. For me, it’s a way to appreciate these places, and also to reflect their beauty for others to see.

My specialty is line art, inspired by my favorite comic book artists like Hergè and Bill Watterson. I have also explored digital painting, which I learned to combine with my current style. While my artwork is mostly digital, I prefer a handmade look that doesn’t have to be perfect.

Currently, I am developing my first graphic novel, aimed towards a young adult audience.

Artist Statement:

I wish to show people something cool.

From reflecting the world through my art, I hope people can find an appreciation for the places around them, especially the small things that make them so unique. I hope my art can help people somewhere in their lives, even if it’s simply a smile.

I choose not to make perfect art, but art made by a human hand.
